2001 BOX STALLION ENCLOSURE CHARDONNAY
Comments: Subtle floral nose; perfumed and fragrant.  A big, rich, creamy palate but still elegant, flavoursome and complex.  3.5 stars.

2001 BOX STALLION RED BARN CHARDONNAY
Comments: Very pale colour.  "Poised and restrained" was one judge's comments about this wine.  The fruit is restrained on the nose but the oak is a little more obvious.  Very subtle fruit flavours; some sweetness.  Palate gets a little oaky towards the finish but has really good length and should age well.  4 stars.

2003 BOX STALLION SHIRAZ
Comments: The 2003 follows on from Box Stallion's multi-awarded, first release 2001.  It's another blockbuster – highly aromatic, with black cherry/pepper/spice, plenty of mid-palate juiciness, well-integrated oak and firm tannins.

BOX STALLION DOLCETTO
Article: New Age Reds.  Written by Sally Gudgeon.
Dolcetto comes from the Italian word 'Dolce' meaning sweet/soft/mild.  As the name suggests, it makes easy drinking wines, which should be consumed young and fresh.  It has neither the tannins nor acid to sustain ageing.  At its best it has black cherry/raspberry fruit notes, a touch of almond and a savoury finish.  Box Stallion makes one in this genre.  Brown Brothers make a slightly sweeter, spritzy style, which is low in alcohol, soft and fruity.

2003 Box Stallion Shiraz, A$27.
This wine split the panel but was highly rated overall.  Hooke noted, "Pepper and ripe fruit, even a trace overripe.  Fascinating complexity, with powdery tannins", and Callard added, "Lovely aroma – aniseed, cranberry.  Chalky tannins and long finish."  I liked its richness and balance but found the flavours rather jammy.

Box Stallion Arneis
2003, $27  From the cool-climate Mornington Peninsula, this is a wonderfully fragrant wine with hints of pear, apples and candied fruit.  It is crisp and dry and easy to drink.  Try it with king prawns.

Box Stallion Shiraz Mornington Peninsula
2003 $42  Aromatic, with lots of black pepper and other spices mingling with fresh berries, pomegranate and lively acidity to keep it hopping.  Distinctive and generous, but would be best with food.  Drink now through 2010.  850 cases made. – H.S.
